Beer Sausage & Hops Galore! Coalition Brewing – Portland, OR

I am a very lucky that a short 3 block walk from my apartment stands the Coalition Brewing pub “and 10-barrel brewery.” Not a big brewery or pub but their tasty largely hoppy beers makes the brewery have a big feel to it. It has a very nice outdoor seating area and if you want some of the best grilled cheese (The Grilled Cheese Grill) in town you can walk behind the bar to a primo food cart. The food cart is located on am empty lot which has a British double decker bus that’s one of their dining areas. In the summer Coalition Brewery has a keg trailer near the food cart and the lot is transformed into a beer garden or beer heaven as I prefer to call it. Coalition Brewery also has a unique program which allows home brewers to showcase their beers at the pub. It’s website says the the owners’ “love of beer and the brewing process is the impetus for the Coalator Program, which encourages local home brewers to brew their recipes in the brewery and serve them at the pub.” Nice.

I went to the pub yesterday to relax and not only did I end up relaxing but I also had real good conversations with the bartender and a dude visiting from California. There’s nothing like good company when drinking good beer in a nice pub. I also had one of their beer sausages with sauerkraut and homemade bread. Very good! Yesterday I had their Two Dog’s IPA (6.1% ABV, 77 IBU), Bumps Bitter ESB (5.5% ABV, 55.6 IBU), King Kitty Red (5.74% ABV, 59 IBU) and Apollo Creed Cascadia Dark Ale (6% ABV, 70 IBU) which is a unique Northwest style and a mixture of a black IPA and Stout. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the beers and by looking at the IBUs, you understand why I said this brewery has mostly hoppy beers, which for this Hop Head you wont get any gripes. Check out the rest of the their beer run down. If ever in Portland or if you live here and are near the E. Burnside and 28th area you have to stop by this bad ass brewery. Cheers!

Here’s picture of their sampler I had a few months ago (I know, I know it a crappy pic, sorry).

About Juan J

Greetings from Portland, Oregon. My name is J. and I love to drink beer (I have the belly to prove it too!). I am the only West Coast blogger on this wonderful site. I am also by no means a pundit in the art of tasting and writing about good beer but just a regular dude who has grown to love craft and micro beer especially Oregon and West Coast beers and now I have the opportunity to blog about my likes and dislikes to anyone who wants to read my rants and raves. Portland is filled with good breweries and so is the rest of Oregon and the left coast. As I’ve grown older my taste preferences have also grown from boring and inexpensive domestics to tasty, calorie filled and 'spendy' micro adult beverages. I prefer India Pale Ales (IPAs) along with Amber Ales but any beer that makes my palate happy I'll bottoms up the son of a gun. Here’s one of my favorite quotes: “A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it’s better to be thoroughly sure.” Cheers! 04/19/12

At the moment my favorite brews are/come from:

Hood River, Oregon's Full Sail Brewery (IPA)
Escondido, California's Stone Brewery (IPA)
Eugene, Oregon's Ninkasi Brewery (TG IPA)
Honorable mention:
Lahaina, Maui’s Maui Brewing Co. (Hi.P.Hay IPA)
