Icing on the Cake: Full Sail Wassail

When I toured the Full Sail Brewing Co. in Hood River, Oregon two summers ago, I have to be honest here, I was looking forward to the end of the tour at which time I was hoping to get a free beer to taste. Instead I had to settle for a free pint glass. Don’t get me wrong I’m not an ingrate and was happy for the glass. The tour guide explained that they used to give free beer after tours but the locals got wind of it and were, shockingly, showing up for tours all of the time, ha. Dang locals!!

Today I tried what it’s label describes as a “ridiculously tasty winter ale” from Full Sail called Wassail (ABV 7.0, IBU 56). First I have to disclose that this beer comes from one of my favorite breweries and its cousin Full Sail IPA is one of my favored beers of all time. So I was not only expecting a lot from this beer I was also partial. This dark brown nearly opaque seasonal did not let me down. The color is complimented by a fluffy head with a light brown hue and it sticks around too. Although it was good at first drink the taste appeared to get better and better with every taste. It gave a hoppy and sweet scent reminiscent of an IPA to me. The hoppy finish which to a hop head like myself was the icing on the cake. Cheers.

About Juan J

Greetings from Portland, Oregon. My name is J. and I love to drink beer (I have the belly to prove it too!). I am the only West Coast blogger on this wonderful site. I am also by no means a pundit in the art of tasting and writing about good beer but just a regular dude who has grown to love craft and micro beer especially Oregon and West Coast beers and now I have the opportunity to blog about my likes and dislikes to anyone who wants to read my rants and raves. Portland is filled with good breweries and so is the rest of Oregon and the left coast. As I’ve grown older my taste preferences have also grown from boring and inexpensive domestics to tasty, calorie filled and 'spendy' micro adult beverages. I prefer India Pale Ales (IPAs) along with Amber Ales but any beer that makes my palate happy I'll bottoms up the son of a gun. Here’s one of my favorite quotes: “A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it’s better to be thoroughly sure.” Cheers! 04/19/12

At the moment my favorite brews are/come from:

Hood River, Oregon's Full Sail Brewery (IPA)
Escondido, California's Stone Brewery (IPA)
Eugene, Oregon's Ninkasi Brewery (TG IPA)
Honorable mention:
Lahaina, Maui’s Maui Brewing Co. (Hi.P.Hay IPA)

  1. Definitely need to go back for another tour. I remember it was like walking into the Wanka Factory. Man, I wanted to be like Gusto and fall into the delious river of hops. Good write up.

  2. Wonka.
